How the visa works

The visa encompasses five distinct categories: Medical Treatment (arranging treatment, surgeries, consultations), Organ Donor (donating organs domestically), Support Person (accompanying the primary applicant), Unfit to Depart (for those aged 50+ meeting permanent residency criteria except health, unable to medically leave), and Compelling Reasons (for prior qualifying visa holders facing compelling circumstances).

Which category applies?

Medical treatment category

Arrangements must be finalised with confirmed payment obligations not redirected to Australia’s healthcare system.

Organ donor category

Identical cost and arrangement provisions apply to domestic organ donation scenarios.

Support person category

Must travel specifically to support the medical treatment recipient.

Unfit to depart category

Must be in Australia, aged 50+, meet permanent residency criteria except health requirements, and face medical barriers to departure.

Compelling reasons category

Prior qualification under another category, current visa holding, and documented compelling circumstances or financial hardship required.

Health & character

Standard health and character assessments apply to applicable visa categories.
