Australian Citizenship

Australian citizenship is more than a legal status — it is the moment Australia stops being the country you live in and becomes the country you belong to. For many migrants, it marks the end of years of uncertainty, visa renewals, and the quiet anxiety of knowing your right to stay is conditional. Citizenship changes that permanently.

If you have held permanent residency and lived in Australia for at least four years — including at least one year as a permanent resident — you may already qualify. Our lawyers will assess your eligibility, identify any gaps, and prepare an application that puts your best case forward.

The benefits reach further than most people realise. As a citizen you can vote, hold an Australian passport, access government and public service roles closed to permanent residents, and cannot be deported. Children born to you after your grant automatically become Australian citizens themselves.

The path to citizenship is the final step in a journey that has already demanded enormous commitment. It deserves the same careful legal attention as every step that came before it.

How the visa works

Three pathways exist: By Birth (children born in Australia with at least one parent holding PR or citizenship), By Descent (children of Australian citizens born overseas), and By Conferral (non-citizens applying through the formal conferral process after meeting residency requirements). Australia supports dual citizenship, though applicants should verify their home country’s policies.

Can I apply?

Permanent residency

Must hold permanent residency status for a minimum of 12 months before applying.

Lawful residency

Must have been a lawful resident for at least 4 years.

Absence limits

Cannot exceed 1 year outside Australia in the last 4 years; maximum 90 days in the last 12 months.

Intent

Must intend to maintain a close Australian connection after citizenship is granted.

Character

Must pass the character test if over 18. Higher standard than visa applications; convictions within 5 years may prevent approval.

Exemptions

Applicants under 16, those with specific Papua birth circumstances, or those meeting special residence requirements may qualify for exemptions.
