How the visa works

The 590 visa is for parents, legal guardians, or close relatives (excluding cousins) of student visa holders. The guardian must satisfy financial requirements for both themselves and the student, arrange accommodation, and cover student-related expenses. Visa holders cannot work or study while in Australia.

Can I apply?

Eligible guardian

Must be a parent, legal guardian, or close relative (not a cousin) of the student visa holder.

Financial requirements

Must demonstrate capacity to meet financial requirements for both themselves and the student, including accommodation and student expenses.

Health insurance

Adequate health insurance coverage is mandatory for the entire stay.

Children under 6

If the applicant has dependent children under 6, compelling and compassionate reasons must exist for the grant.

Visa restrictions

Certain current visa holders cannot apply (403, 485, 600, and others). Must hold or have held a substantive visa within the previous 28 days.

Work and study prohibition

590 visa holders cannot work or study while holding the visa in Australia.
