482 Visa Processing Times in 2026

Written and reviewed by the Reliance Law Group immigration team · Last reviewed August 2026

You have a job offer, the business is ready to sponsor you, and the only question left is when you can actually start. Processing time is the number everyone wants, but it is really three separate applications stacked on top of each other, and only one of them appears in the published figures.

Short answer: the visa stage of a 482 is commonly decided in anywhere from a few weeks to a few months, and longer where the nomination is complex. Add the sponsorship and nomination stages before it, and a realistic end-to-end estimate is three to six months from a standing start.

How long does a 482 visa take?

The published processing time only covers the visa application itself. A worker starting from scratch with a business that has never sponsored anyone waits through three stages:

Stage What happens Typical wait
1. Sponsorship
The business is approved as a standard business sponsor
Weeks, longer if financials need explaining
2. Nomination
The specific role and salary are approved
Weeks to months, depending on stream
3. Visa
The worker’s own application is decided
2 months or more for most applications

If the employer already holds sponsorship approval, stage one disappears and the timeline shortens considerably. That is why two workers in identical roles can have very different start dates.

What makes a 482 faster?

The single biggest factor is whether the application is decision-ready when it is lodged. An application that arrives complete tends to be assessed once. An application with gaps gets a request for further information, and each request adds weeks while the file sits waiting.

What causes delays?

Most delay is self-inflicted rather than departmental. The recurring causes are a position description that does not align with the nominated occupation, labour market testing that was advertised incorrectly or has expired, thin business financials that raise questions about capacity to pay, and incomplete personal documents such as unresolved police certificates from a country the applicant lived in years ago.

Health issues and character matters are the other significant cause, and they are not quick to resolve once raised. If either applies, factor in months rather than weeks.

Can you work while you wait?

This depends entirely on your current visa. If you are onshore and hold a substantive visa when you apply, you generally receive a bridging visa that lets you remain, with the work conditions of your previous visa until the 482 is granted. If your current visa allows no work, the bridging visa generally will not either. Applying offshore means waiting outside Australia until grant.

Timing the lodgement so your existing work rights carry through the gap is one of the more practical parts of planning a sponsorship, and it is worth getting right before a resignation date is set.

How long does the visa last once granted?

A 482 under the Skills in Demand framework is generally granted for up to four years, with the exact period tied to the sponsorship term requested in the nomination. Because the employer’s levy is charged per year requested, the length of the visa and the cost to the business are directly linked, so the term is a decision rather than a default.

What should the employer be doing in parallel?

All three applications can be lodged at the same time, though the stages are sequential in approval but not in preparation. A business can be assembling financials and position descriptions while labour market testing runs, so that the nomination is ready to lodge the moment sponsorship is lodged. Sequencing the work this way, rather than waiting for each approval before starting the next, is usually where weeks are saved. Our 482 visa team runs sponsorship, nomination and visa as one project for that reason.

Frequently asked questions

There is no paid priority service. Accredited sponsorship used to be a fast track, but the Department of Home Affairs has now changed this directive.

Yes. Sponsorship and nomination must be approved for the visa to be granted, though applications can in some cases be lodged in parallel to save time. An employer with existing approval skips a whole stage.

Generally you can begin once the visa is granted and you are in Australia. Starting work before grant, unless your current visa permits it, could be a breach of your visa conditions.

Not usually in itself, but every additional person needs health checks and police certificates, so an incomplete family document set is a common cause of delay.

The visa cannot be granted on that nomination. Depending on the reason there may be review rights, or the practical path may be a corrected fresh nomination. The application charge is generally not refunded.
